C+B Architects Transform Iconic Metlife Centre into Futuristic Hotel Sky Cape Town
C+B’s Hotel Sky Project, led by Frans Bergh, have played a significant role in transforming the former Metlife Centre office block in Cape Town into the futuristic Hotel Sky. This innovative hotel features 535 tech-savvy suites and two friendly robotic concierges, Ariel and Skyla, who guide guests through automated check-ins and provide app-enabled key cards for their rooms.
Situated opposite the Cape Town International Convention Centre, the 27-story Modernist building maintains its iconic stepped profile and stately exterior. However, Cottle and Bergh Architects have expertly redesigned the interior to create an eclectic, uniquely South African experience, complete with elements such as leopard prints, gold mosaics, and vertical gardens. Frans Bergh led the exceptional design of the hotel’s foyer and restaurant.
Working closely with design architect Jo Noero, the team focused on creating small, intimate rooms and transforming communal spaces into experiential destinations. Hotel Sky Cape Town offers guests an upscale experience at affordable room rates, featuring amenities such as a cocktail bar, restaurant, pool decks, a gym, and a rooftop tower ride.
Noero was responsible for reconfiguring the building’s inner structure into functional hospitality spaces. By working within a structural grid based on three parking bays, he designed narrow, rectangular rooms with high ceilings, maximizing the available space. The result is a mini-city that guests can explore without ever leaving the hotel.
We are proud to have been part of the effort that led Hotel Sky Cape Town to win the prestigious Luxury Rooftop View Hotel award in the Country category for South Africa, Southern Africa region, and Africa continent. This achievement showcases the exceptional design and experience offered by the hotel, and we are honoured to have contributed to its success.
