Sandton Day Hospital
Sandton, Johannesburg | Interior Architecture Concept Design
C+B Architects were commissioned to develop the interior architectural concept for @Sandton Day Hospital, envisioning a contemporary medical facility. Although the project was never realised, the proposal explored how thoughtful interior architecture could enhance patient wellbeing while supporting the operational efficiency required within a modern day hospital.
The design philosophy centred on creating a calm, reassuring, and human-centred environment that reduced the stress often associated with healthcare settings. Rather than adopting a clinical aesthetic, the concept introduced warm, hospitality-inspired interiors that balanced medical functionality with comfort, dignity, and wellbeing.
Spatial planning was carefully considered to optimise patient flow, staff efficiency, and clinical functionality. Reception areas, consultation suites, operating theatres, recovery wards, and administrative spaces were arranged to create intuitive circulation while maintaining the strict separation required between public, clinical, and sterile environments. The result was a highly organised interior that supported seamless operational workflows without compromising the patient experience.
Natural light played a central role throughout the design, with glazing, internal transparency, and carefully framed views contributing to a brighter and more uplifting atmosphere. Interior finishes were selected not only for their aesthetic qualities but also for their durability, hygiene, ease of maintenance, and compliance with healthcare standards.
The concept embraced the growing shift toward patient-centred healthcare design, recognising that architecture plays a vital role in reducing anxiety, improving recovery experiences, and supporting staff wellbeing. By drawing inspiration from contemporary hospitality design rather than traditional institutional models, the proposal sought to create a healthcare environment that was efficient, compassionate, and visually refined.
