Midrand, Johannesburg | Architectural Concept Design | Adaptive Reuse
C+B Architects developed an architectural concept for the transformation of an existing retail building in Midrand into a contemporary Chery automotive showroom. The proposal explored the potential of adaptive reuse, reimagining an established commercial structure as a modern automotive retail destination that reflects Chery's evolving brand identity and contemporary design philosophy. The concept focused on revitalising the existing building through a bold architectural intervention, introducing a refreshed façade, expansive glazing, and a distinctive showroom presence. Clean architectural lines, contemporary materials, and carefully considered branding elements were proposed to establish a strong visual identity while enhancing the building's connection to its surrounding commercial environment. Internally, the design envisioned an open, light-filled showroom that placed the vehicles at the centre of the customer experience. Flexible display areas, welcoming customer lounges, and streamlined sales environments were considered to create a seamless relationship between product presentation, customer engagement, and operational functionality. A key consideration was the retention and transformation of the existing building fabric, demonstrating how established retail properties can be repositioned to accommodate evolving commercial requirements. The approach sought to balance architectural impact with practical considerations of cost, sustainability, and efficient redevelopment. Although developed at concept stage only, the proposal illustrates the potential of adaptive reuse to transform conventional retail architecture into a distinctive automotive destination, combining contemporary design, brand expression, and a renewed urban presence.
