Matatiele, Eastern Cape
2013
C+B Architects were commissioned to develop the interior architectural concept for Chikitos Mexican Restaurant in Matatiele, creating a vibrant hospitality destination inspired by the energy, colour, and social culture of contemporary Mexican dining. Although the project was never realised, the concept explored how architecture and interior design could translate the spirit of Mexican cuisine into an engaging and memorable customer experience.
The design was centered around the idea of celebration and community — embracing the lively atmosphere traditionally associated with Mexican food culture while adapting it to a contemporary South African context. The restaurant was envisioned as a welcoming social hub where family gatherings, casual dining, and festive occasions could take place within a rich and immersive environment.
A bold material and colour palette formed the foundation of the design concept. Warm terracotta tones, textured plaster walls, handcrafted timber elements, patterned tiles, and colourful feature installations combined to create an interior that felt energetic, authentic, and layered. Vibrant accents were balanced by natural materials and soft lighting, ensuring the space remained comfortable and inviting rather than overly themed.
