Cresta, Johannesburg
2015
C+B Architects were commissioned to develop the interior architectural concept for Cush Restaurant at Cresta, envisioning a contemporary dining destination that would offer a distinctive and immersive hospitality experience within one of Johannesburg's established retail precincts. Although the project was never realised, the concept explored the creation of a refined yet approachable restaurant environment where design, atmosphere, and culinary experience would converge.
The design sought to move beyond the traditional shopping centre restaurant model by creating a destination space with a strong individual identity. Inspired by the social nature of dining, the concept focused on crafting a series of interconnected environments that could accommodate everything from casual daytime gatherings and business lunches to evening dining and celebratory occasions.
A warm and contemporary material palette formed the foundation of the design language. Natural timber, textured stone, feature metalwork, and rich upholstery were layered to create a sophisticated yet inviting atmosphere. Carefully considered lighting strategies introduced depth and intimacy throughout the space, allowing the restaurant to transition seamlessly from a vibrant daytime venue to a more atmospheric evening destination.
The spatial planning was organised around a variety of dining experiences, incorporating intimate booths, communal tables, lounge seating, and flexible gathering areas. A feature bar was positioned as a focal point within the restaurant, acting as both a social anchor and visual landmark while encouraging interaction and extending guest dwell time.
Transparency and theatre were central to the concept. Open kitchen elements, curated food displays, and carefully framed views through the restaurant created a dynamic and engaging environment where guests could connect with the energy of the dining experience. Architectural detailing was used to define spaces without creating enclosure, maintaining a sense of openness while providing comfort and privacy.
The proposed interior balanced contemporary urban sophistication with warmth and authenticity, creating a hospitality environment that felt both aspirational and accessible. Although unbuilt, the Cush Restaurant concept demonstrated a considered approach to modern restaurant design, using architecture, materiality, and atmosphere to create memorable social experiences within a highly competitive hospitality market.
