Menlyn Maine, Pretoria
2018
C+B Architects developed the concept design for a contemporary coffee kiosk within the vibrant urban precinct of Menlyn Maine, reimagining the humble shipping container as a sophisticated architectural destination. Conceived as a compact yet highly expressive intervention, the proposal explored the potential of modular architecture to create an engaging public space that complemented the energy and walkability of one of South Africa's leading mixed-use developments.
The design celebrated the industrial honesty of the shipping container while elevating it through carefully considered architectural detailing. Clean lines, precision-crafted steelwork, timber cladding, and expansive glazed openings transformed the utilitarian structure into a refined hospitality environment that balanced functionality with contemporary urban character.
The kiosk was conceived as an active streetscape destination, designed to engage pedestrians through generous serving windows, integrated seating, and landscaped outdoor gathering spaces. Large folding façades dissolved the boundary between the interior and surrounding public realm, allowing the coffee experience to extend into shaded plazas and creating an animated social hub throughout the day.
Internally, the compact footprint was meticulously planned to maximise operational efficiency without compromising customer experience. Every element—from the barista workflow and equipment integration to storage and service points—was carefully coordinated to support high-volume trading within a minimal architectural footprint.
The material palette reflected the contemporary character of Menlyn Maine, combining exposed steel, natural timber, polished concrete, and blackened metal detailing with warm lighting and bespoke joinery. Integrated planting softened the industrial architecture, while carefully curated branding elements created a memorable identity that could be replicated across multiple locations.
Sustainability and modularity formed key drivers of the proposal. By repurposing a shipping container, the concept embraced adaptive reuse and off-site fabrication, reducing construction time, minimising material waste, and allowing the kiosk to be relocated or expanded as operational requirements evolved.
The proposal envisioned the kiosk as more than a place to purchase coffee—it was designed as a neighbourhood meeting point that activated the public realm and contributed to the vibrant street life of Menlyn Maine. The result was a contemporary architectural statement that demonstrated how compact, modular design can deliver a premium hospitality experience through thoughtful planning, refined detailing, and a strong connection to its urban context.
