WeBuyCars Midrand - Concept
2018
As part of the flagship WeBuyCars campus in Midrand, C+B Architects developed a contemporary coffee concept designed to elevate the customer experience beyond the traditional vehicle buying environment. The proposal reimagined the dealership café as a destination in its own right—creating a vibrant hospitality space that reflects the energy, accessibility, and innovation of the WeBuyCars brand.
Positioned within one of South Africa's largest automotive retail destinations, the coffee concept was envisioned as a place where customers could relax, meet, work, and socialise while engaging with the wider showroom environment. The design transformed waiting time into a positive experience, recognising that hospitality plays an increasingly important role in shaping customer perception and brand loyalty.
The architectural language drew inspiration from the industrial character of the automotive industry, combining exposed steel, natural timber, polished concrete, and contemporary detailing to create an environment that was both authentic and sophisticated. Warm material finishes softened the industrial palette, creating a welcoming atmosphere that appealed equally to customers, staff, and visitors.
The café was organised around an open barista counter that became the social heart of the space, encouraging interaction and showcasing the theatre of coffee preparation. Flexible seating arrangements—including communal tables, casual lounge areas, high counters, and informal meeting spaces—supported a variety of uses throughout the day, from quick coffee stops to business meetings and extended customer visits.
The proposal also embraced the growing trend of mixed-use retail environments, where food and beverage offerings enhance the overall destination experience. Rather than functioning as a secondary amenity, the coffee concept was designed to become an integral part of the customer journey—encouraging visitors to spend more time within the showroom while creating opportunities for informal interaction and consultant engagement.
Although developed as a concept proposal, the project reflects C+B Architects' approach to hospitality / retail design: creating memorable, functional, and commercially driven environments where architecture strengthens both brand identity and the user experience. The result is a contemporary café concept that complements the scale and ambition of the WeBuyCars flagship development while establishing a new benchmark for customer-focused automotive retail environments.
